2003 - Bark to Rock

Joint exhibition with Elsje Whealing
Balmain Watchhouse, March 2003
My first major show producing 35 artworks. The opening night was pumping with over 250 guests and many sales. The exhibition was opened by the president of the NSW Art Gallery Society, David Stewart-Hunter and each guest received a 'peace stone' and 'wax leaf' as a memento of the show. Elsje and I put a lot of work into making the show enjoyable for ourselves and the visitors. We had inspirational quotes scattered amongst the paintings and the historic space of the old police station and Balmain prison cells created its own interest. It was fun to exhibit our work in cells whose walls would've been very blank for inmates! Also the organic nature of the work complimented the atmosphere amongst the sandstone walls. This collection of rocks shows a progression from natural abstract expression to a more minimal and human suggestion in the forms shown in the 'Rockpeople'.
