Following on from my rock people 'Earth Mother' series and vessel paintings of last year I became inspired to combine the two. 'As Female' was opened by Melissa McElhone of Artsource art agents to great response. I researched historical vessels made in the female form and discovered this practice goes back to early human culture and continues to this day in many indigenous societies around the globe. These female icons are the defining human image in early archaeology; they are a cultural phenomenon that is widespread and important in the iconography and study of ancient cultures. They reflect the spiritual concerns and ritual life of the people who created them and are some of the earliest art forms known to man. In this series I aim to create my own tribute to the female vessel with a contemporary edge. I hope you enjoy these works 'Vessel as Female and Female as Vessel' and see them as a celebration of the gift of life and how humanity has represented and revered this over the millennia.
